6-Day Rongai Route Kilimanjaro Climb Itinerary
The Rongai Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border, offering a quieter, less-traveled path to the summit. This 6-day itinerary provides excellent acclimatization with a gradual ascent through remote wilderness, montane forest, and alpine desert before reaching the crater rim at Gilman's Point. Rongai is the only route that approaches from the northern side of the mountain, making it drier during the rainy season and offering unique perspectives of the Kenyan plains below.

Itinerary
Expandable day-by-day program
Depart Arusha after breakfast and drive to Rongai Gate (1,950m) near the Kenyan border. Complete registration and begin trekking through farmland and montane forest. Spot colobus monkeys and blue monkeys in the trees. Reach Simba Camp (2,650m) in the late afternoon. 3–4 hours hiking, approx. 7 km.
Continue through the heather and moorland zone with views of the Kenyan plains to the north. The vegetation thins as you gain altitude. Arrive at Second Cave (3,450m) for lunch, then continue to Kikelewa Camp (3,600m) for overnight. 6–7 hours hiking, approx. 11 km.
A shorter hiking day designed for acclimatization. Ascend through alpine desert to Mawenzi Tarn (4,315m), a stunning campsite nestled beneath the jagged spires of Mawenzi Peak. Afternoon rest with optional short acclimatization walk. 4–5 hours hiking, approx. 6 km.
Cross the lunar-like saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The landscape becomes barren and rocky. Reach Kibo Hut (4,700m) in the early afternoon. Rest, hydrate, and prepare equipment for the midnight summit attempt. Early dinner and sleep. 5–6 hours hiking, approx. 9 km.
Midnight wake-up for the final ascent. Trek by headlamp up steep switchbacks to Gilman's Point (5,681m) on the crater rim. Continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the roof of Africa. Descend back to Kibo for rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut (3,720m) for overnight. 12–15 hours, summit + descent.
Descend through the moorland and rainforest on the Marangu route side to Marangu Gate (1,860m). Sign out and receive your summit certificate. Transfer back to Arusha for a hot shower and celebration. 5–6 hours descent. Overnight in Arusha.
