6-Day Umbwe Route Kilimanjaro Climb Itinerary
The Umbwe Route is Kilimanjaro's steepest, most direct, and most challenging ascent path — designed for experienced trekkers seeking a true test of endurance. Rising sharply through dense rainforest into the alpine zone in just two days, this route rewards climbers with dramatic ridge walks, spectacular views of the Barranco Valley, and a powerful sense of remoteness. The 6-day itinerary includes an acclimatization day at Barranco Camp before merging with the Umbwe Route for the summit push.

Itinerary
Expandable day-by-day program
Early departure from Arusha and drive to Umbwe Gate (1,600m). Complete registration formalities and begin the steep climb through dense, humid montane rainforest. The trail follows a narrow ridge with thick vegetation on both sides. Reach Umbwe Cave Camp (2,940m) in the late afternoon. 5–6 hours hiking, approx. 10 km with significant elevation gain.
Exit the rainforest into the heather and moorland zone. The trail remains steep as you follow the Umbwe Ridge with increasingly dramatic views of the valley below. Reach Barranco Camp (3,950m) in the early afternoon. Afternoon rest with spectacular views of the Barranco Wall and Kibo peak. 5–6 hours hiking, approx. 6 km.
Acclimatization day at Barranco Camp. Morning walk up the Barranco Wall (a non-technical scramble with some exposure) to the top for panoramic views. Return to camp for lunch and rest. This critical extra day dramatically improves summit success rates on the Umbwe Route. 3–4 hours, light activity.
Trek from Barranco Camp through the alpine desert to Karanga Camp (3,995m), then continue to Barafu Camp (4,673m). The terrain becomes barren and rocky as you approach the high camp. Early dinner and preparation for the midnight summit attempt. 7–8 hours hiking, approx. 9 km.
Midnight departure for the summit. Trek by headlamp through heavy scree to Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim. Continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa. Descend to Barafu for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp (3,100m) in the rainforest zone. 12–15 hours, summit + descent.
Descend through the lush lower rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,640m). Sign out, collect your summit certificate, and enjoy a celebration lunch. Transfer back to Arusha. 3–4 hours descent. Overnight in Arusha.
