Day Plan
Hour-by-hour overview
Early morning pickup from your hotel in Arusha (approx. 06:30) for the scenic drive to Mandara Gate (1,860m). Complete park registration and meet your mountain guide. The drive takes approximately 2 hours through coffee and banana plantations on the slopes of Kilimanjaro. Arrive at Mandara Gate around 08:30 for registration formalities and a briefing from your guide.
Begin the gradual ascent through dense, mossy montane rainforest. The well-maintained trail winds beneath towering trees draped in old man's beard lichen. Your guide points out colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and unique flora along the way. The hike to Mandara Hut (2,700m) takes approximately 3–4 hours, covering about 8 km with a steady but moderate gradient. Take rest breaks at scenic points along the trail.
Arrive at Mandara Hut — the iconic wooden A-frame huts where multi-day climbers spend their first night. Enjoy your packed picnic lunch with views of the surrounding forest. After lunch, take the optional 15-minute side hike to Maundi Crater for spectacular panoramic views of Mawenzi Peak's jagged spires, the Kenyan plains to the north, and on clear days, the snow-capped summit of Kibo.
Begin the descent back to Mandara Gate, retracing your steps through the forest. The downhill hike takes approximately 2–3 hours. At the gate, sign out and receive your official hiking certificate. Transfer back to Arusha, arriving in the early evening (approx. 18:00). A hot shower and a cold drink await — you have earned your Kilimanjaro story.
