Hour-by-hour overview
Early departure from Arusha (approx. 06:00) for the scenic drive west toward the Londorossi Gate on Kilimanjaro's remote western flank. The journey takes approximately 3 hours through farmland, montane forest, and rural villages. Complete park registration at Londorossi Gate (2,200m) and transfer to a 4x4 vehicle for the rough track ascent to Moram Barrier Gate at approximately 3,400m.
Begin your guided hike from Moram Point onto the vast Shira Plateau — a dramatic high-altitude landscape of volcanic rock, ancient lava flows, and alpine moorland. The plateau itself is the collapsed caldera of Kilimanjaro's oldest volcano. Walk among giant groundsels and lobelias, unique plants that evolved to survive at extreme altitudes. The hike covers approximately 10–12 km round trip across relatively gentle terrain, reaching elevations between 3,500–3,800m.
Stop for a well-deserved picnic lunch on the plateau. On clear days, the views are extraordinary — Kibo Peak's glaciers and snow-cap loom on the eastern horizon while the Shira Cathedral, a dramatic rock formation, rises to the south. The altitude means cooler temperatures, so layered clothing is essential. Your guide will share the geological history of Kilimanjaro's three volcanic cones — Shira, Mawenzi, and Kibo.
Retrace your steps across the plateau back to Moram Point, then descend by 4x4 to Londorossi Gate. Sign out and receive your hiking certificate. The drive back to Arusha takes approximately 3–4 hours, with arrival in the early evening (approx. 18:30–19:00). The day is long but the experience of standing on Kilimanjaro's ancient volcanic plateau is unforgettable.
