The 600-metre descent into the crater floor reveals a self-contained ecosystem of grasslands, acacia forests, and a soda lake. Day Plan

Hour-by-hour overview

Depart your Arusha hotel at approximately 05:30 for the scenic drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The journey takes about 3 hours through the Great Rift Valley, passing Lake Manyara and rural Maasai villages. Arrive at the crater rim viewpoint for your first breathtaking panorama of the caldera below.
Descend 600 metres down the winding crater access road into the caldera floor. Begin your morning game drive across the grasslands, where the density of wildlife is astonishing. Spot large lion prides, massive elephant bulls, herds of buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, and hippos wallowing in the pools. Keep your binoculars ready for the elusive black rhino — Ngorongoro offers one of the best chances to see this critically endangered species in the wild.
Stop at the designated picnic site near Ngoitoktok Swamp for a packed lunch with views of the hippo pool. Flamingos, storks, and other waterbirds feed along the soda lake margins. After lunch, continue your game drive across the southern and central crater areas.
Enjoy a final game drive as you make your way toward the ascent road. Climb back up to the crater rim by mid-afternoon and begin the drive back to Arusha, arriving at your hotel around 18:00. A long but unforgettable day on one of Africa's most legendary wildlife stages.
